Our Story
Being a Canadian couple with Portuguese roots, we made the life-changing decision to leave our lives in Canada and relocate to the beautiful Algarve region with our children. Our plan was to establish a better work-life balance for our family while starting a small business renting out units.
Through a Facebook acquaintance, we received a recommendation for a reputed and trustworthy construction company in Algarve. They assured us they could complete the construction of our four units within just four months and made other several promises.
Once we signed the contract, the company's director maintained regular contact with us, suggesting various enticing additions beyond our original plans, such as a swimming pool, pergola, barbecue and more. However, as time passed, he began asking for extra money under the pretext of COVID-related supply chain issues, rising costs and personal hardships.
To deceive us into believing progress was being made, he would for example, send us pictures showing that entire rooms were completed but we later found out that they had only laid down a few square meters of tiles, to make it seem like it was completed. To build our trust, he even convinced us to install internet connectivity for security cameras, which were never actually set up. When we requested comprehensive pictures, he dodged the issue, promising a big reveal. Regrettably, we did fall for his lies and sent more money to him. As the requests became more frequent, we started to become more suspicious but couldn’t do much since we were all the way in Canada.
Seven months into the project, it was confirmed that it really was a scam. Upon arriving in Algarve, we discovered the property was an unfinished mess. The company had carelessly torn out driveways, fences, and other elements that were meant to be preserved. They even left workers unpaid, suppliers were demanding payment for orders they had not received and all our carefully chosen furniture we had purchased was nowhere to be found.
In a desperate situation, we had to find temporary accommodation, adding to our financial stress. We had invested all our savings into the project, leaving us with very little to start over and to rectify the shoddy construction.
Despite the distress, we knew we had to take action. We promptly fired the company and initiated legal proceedings against them. This experience served as a turning point for us, we became determined to complete the build and were fortunate enough to find good workers to help us dismantle and rebuild everything from scratch. The upside of this experience is that we ended up building the units exactly the way we wanted it to be. We know that every part of the process was done properly and meets the required safety standards, and the materials used were of high quality.
We also discovered we had a knack for this, from renovating and upselling our own homes over the years and have previous management construction company to prevent others from experiencing similar hardships. And that is how Luz Do Sol - Southern Light Algarve was created. Our core values are honesty, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Our mission is to protect others from falling victim to scams, creating an environment where trust is paramount, and customer satisfaction is at the forefront of everything we do.
